Nominations are now open for the first-ever Black Student Alliance Awards. These awards, launched by the African Heritage Month Committee, will recognize up to three outstanding groups that support Black students, build their leadership capacity and create more inclusive schools.
These inaugural awards celebrate the achievements of Black Student Alliances (BSAs) – student groups that increase student voice, build capacity in student leadership and are supported by a TDSB staff member – that seek to empower Black students, create safer and more inclusive spaces and provide leadership opportunities for students of African Heritage.
Their work may include ongoing meetings and discussions, school assemblies, guest speakers, presentations, and other initiatives that challenge anti-Black racism and help further the TDSB’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and Black student success.
Three prizes of $300 will be awarded for the winning BSAs to use towards their activities for the school year.
To be considered for the award, submit a 1-2 page statement explaining the history of the BSA and why it was started, the work it undertakes, its membership, and an outline of the impact the group aims to make for the 2019-20 school year and beyond. Please submit photos, links to videos, stories of impact, etc. to support your nomination.
