The Ministry of Education, together with the Toronto District School Board, has announced $16 million for the replacement of Poplar Road Junior Public School in Guildwood. This week’s announcement also included $2.5 million in funding for the expansion of nearby Elizabeth Simcoe Junior Public School.
The new school will have a capacity for approximately 340 students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 and will replace an older school which was in poor condition. This new, barrier-free school will offer a range of instructional classrooms, including specialized spaces for students attending the school for Special Education programming, and amenities like a large gymnasium and learning commons. The new school supports the recommendations of a Pupil Accommodation Review that concluded in June 2018.
“We welcome this exciting news from the province to build a brand-new school that will better serve the Scarborough community at Poplar Rd JPS,” said Zakir Patel, TDSB Trustee, Ward 19. “88 new licensed childcare spaces will also be built at the new school in addition to updates and new student spaces at Elizabeth Simcoe JPS.”
Updates at Elizabeth Simcoe JPS will see a new double-gym addition and internal renovations to add new classroom space for nearly 50 students.
