Director of Education John Malloy will retire from the Toronto District School Board. During a Special Board meeting today, Trustees accepted his retirement, which will be effective November 1, 2020.

Prior to joining the TDSB, Malloy had a 25-year career in public education as a teacher, guidance counsellor, vice-principal and principal in the Toronto Catholic District School Board before he served as Superintendent of Education with the Durham Catholic District School Board and the York Region District School Board. He then became Director of Education for the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and finally Chief Student Achievement Officer and Assistant Deputy Minister of the Student Achievement Division at the Ontario Ministry of Education.

The Board of Trustees will now begin a comprehensive search process for a new Director of Education, with the goal of finding his replacement by November 2020.

Quick Facts

·       John Malloy has held the role of TDSB Director of Education since January 2016.

"John has been an exceptional, caring and effective leader. When he came to this Board, we were in a very different position than we are today and after many years of turmoil we were ready for a fresh start, one that John provided. Thanks to John’s leadership, tireless work, dedication, and willingness to have hard discussions — and help us as a board to make hard decisions — the TDSB is now seen as a model of excellence in equity and instruction in North America. John led the way for that success. John will be deeply missed and I know my trustee colleagues and all staff sincerely wish him the very best in his well-deserved retirement from the TDSB.”

- Robin Pilkey, Chair, TDSB

“I am grateful for the privilege of serving students, staff, parents and our community in TDSB over the last several years. I have been so impressed with the courage of this board and staff to focus and act on issues of equity. As I reflect on the progress we have made together to help every student succeed, I know that the foundation has been set for this important work to continue because of the amazing leadership happening at every level of the system.”
