The thoughts of the students and staff of the Toronto District School Board are with the victims, their loved ones and the larger Jewish community following Saturday's deadly shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Each day at the TDSB, we work to ensure that our schools are safe and caring spaces for everyone to learn and work. This horrible act of antisemitism will only further strengthen our resolve to engage students in conversations about building a society that is more inclusive, respectful and compassionate.
We remain committed to supporting all of our students and staff, some of whom may be experiencing feelings of vulnerability or insecurity following Saturday's attack. Media coverage at times like this can also be very challenging for some students. Our Professional Support Services staff have assembled the following tips for parents that may help with discussions with children.
UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, its advocacy agent, the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), and many other Jewish organizations are hosting a community-wide vigil this evening (Monday, October 29) at 7 p.m. at Mel Lastman Square (5100 Yonge Street) in memory of the victims. Members of the TDSB community who are attending the vigil are invited to gather inside the TDSB Education Centre (5050 Yonge Street) for light refreshments at 6 p.m.
