My sincere condolences are with family, friends, classmates and teachers of 15-year-old Maahir Dosani and the larger Victoria Park CI community following yesterday’s senseless act of violence outside of the school. I was at the school this morning to offer my support for the community and share in their collective grief. I am grateful for the school staff and the Caring and Safe Schools, Social Work and Psychology staff who were at Victoria Park CI this morning to offer support and counselling, who will remain at the school for as long as needed.
A violent crime such as this on school property understandably raises questions about safety in our school community. Police have a suspect in custody and have assured us that there are no threats to the school or public safety. We want to reassure students that they are safe, and we are here to listen to their concerns and take action where necessary. We will work with the school, the Caring and Safe Schools team, and the Toronto Police Service to ensure that all measures are taken to support the school community. Every staff member is committed to keeping our students safe today, and every day.
