The Toronto District School Board received approximately 6,000 comments from parents/guardians, students and secondary school teachers through a recent survey that reveals the key reasons as to why they do not support the Government of Ontario’s plan for mandatory e-learning.
The key concerns are:
- Lack of Face to Face Interaction Necessary for Learning;
- Inability to Meet the Needs of all Learners;
- Inequitable Access to Technology;
- Online Format of Instruction; and
- Lack of Information and Research Evidence.
The report builds on the initial results of the survey that found most parents/guardians, students and secondary school teachers do not support the government’s plan for mandatory e-learning and do not believe it will benefit students. The report and key concerns (or themes) are based on the analysis of the explanations provided for the following questions:
- In your opinion, would mandatory e-learning/online learning benefit students?
- Do you support the Ministry’s decision to require all students to take two e-learning/online learning credits in secondary school in order to graduate?
The survey was conducted between January 30 and February 11, 2020.
