Dear Mayor Tory,
On behalf of the Toronto District School Board, I want to congratulate the City of Toronto for unanimously passing the Climate Change Declaration. This is the type of leadership we need to help combat climate change and global warming on a local and world-wide scale, and we fully endorse this movement.
For more than 20 years, the TDSB has been actively engaged in climate change action. We are committed to environmentally responsible operations for our schools and administrative sites, and to supporting our students and staff in learning about, caring for and protecting the environment. We have established numerous programs and partnerships to support and expand environmental education for sustainability in schools and continue to reduce the amount of greenhouse emissions from our buildings. The TDSB also spearheaded the nation-wide movement of EcoSchools. This work, and so much more, is guided by our Environment Policy.
We are proud of the work that we have done, but we know that there is much more to do. The TDSB is currently working on further plans to tackle climate change and move to a low-carbon economy, and we would welcome any future opportunity to work with the City to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Thank you for your commitment and on-going work to protect our economy, our ecosystems and our communities from climate change.
As always, I would be happy to discuss this further with you.
Sincerely,
Robin Pilkey, CPA, CA, ICD.D
Chair, Toronto District School Board
