To All TDSB Families,

We look forward to welcoming all students back to class in two weeks! With new information related to the return to school continually emerging, we are committed to providing TDSB families with the most up to date details so everyone is informed and prepared for the first day of school on Thursday, September 9.

Back to School Webinar: Supporting Transitions and Re-Engagement
The start of a new school year is always filled with anticipation, but this year, we recognize the anxiety, fear and uncertainty that comes with returning to learning. Join Professional Support Services staff to connect about some areas where we can help support students, including routines, separation anxiety, and the social and emotional challenges of this new school year. We invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 1 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at www.tdsb.on.ca/letsconnect.

Selection Form Results
We have finalized selection form data and in total, 88% of students will attend school in-person and 12% have selected virtual learning. We remind families that students were automatically placed in in-person learning if we did not receive a completed selection form. As shared last week, requests to switch between in-person and virtual learning are not possible at this time. Your understanding and patience are greatly appreciated as we work to ensure a smooth opening to the 2021-2022 school year.

Mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination
At the Board meeting on Wednesday evening, Trustees voted unanimously to have TDSB staff develop a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination procedure which will require all TDSB staff, Trustees, and visitors to disclose and provide proof of vaccination status and to be fully vaccinated to help protect the health and safety of both staff and students. We know that families may have questions about this new procedure and we will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.

TDSB Health & Safety Practices
As we continue to develop TDSB-specific COVID-19 guidelines, the most up to date information will be posted on the elementary and secondary web pages. Below are the most recent decisions in a number of areas:

  • Daily Screening: The TDSB will require all students and staff to conduct a daily self-assessment and stay home if they have symptoms or other COVID-19 exposure risk factors. The daily screening practice will follow guidance from Toronto Public Health. The daily screening tool will be available to staff and families prior to the first day of school.
  • Nutrition Programs and Food Services: Approved nutrition programs and cafeteria services will be permitted and phased in to allow school routines to be established. Nutrition and cafeteria services will follow appropriate food handling procedures and public health guidance. Special event days (e.g., pizza days) will be phased in later in the school year.

Student Transportation
As was done last year, the Toronto Student Transportation Group (TSTG) will be implementing a phased-in start for student transportation to ensure that we provide consistent service for families, and that students with special education needs in the TDSB are prioritized and receive bus service. From September 9 to September 14, only students with special education needs (excluding those in the gifted program) who travel to school on mini buses, mini vans, taxis and Wheelchair accessible vehicles will be provided with student transportation. Starting September 15, all other eligible students will be provided with student transportation, unless there is a significant driver shortage or other unforeseen issues related to COVID-19. Visit the Student Transportation website for more information.

Let’s continue to work together to make this school year a positive, safe and memorable one.

Sincerely,

Colleen Russell-Rawlins

Director of Education
