Elementary Alternative School Admission Process

Below is a description of the Elementary Alternative School Admission Process (as designed, results, and the remedy).

Admission Process as Designed

458 seats available and 1,285 applicants

Available seats offered to Indigenous students and siblings of current elementary alternative school students who will return in the fall.

25% of remaining seats offered to applicants who self-identify as belonging to an underrepresented group(s).

Remaining seats offered through a random selection process to applicants not yet offered a seat.
Applicants who did not get a seat through the random selection process added to a waitlist.

Probable Proportions of the 458 Seats by Group*:

  • Indigenous Applicants– 5%
  • Siblings of Current and Returning Elementary Alternative School Students - 18%
  • Underrepresented Groups i.e., Racialized Groups, 2SLGBTQIA+, Students with Disabilities - 46%
  • All Other Applicants– 31%

*Assumes seats are available wherever there are Indigenous and/or sibling applicants and all applicants can receive offers

  • Siblings of Current Elementary Alternative School Students - 15%
  • Underrepresented Groups i.e., Racialized Groups, 2SLGBTQIA+, Students with Disabilities - 23%
  • All Other Applicants– 60%

Admission Process Remedy

132 seats offered to students who self-identify as belonging to an underrepresented group(s) based on a grade-by-grade analysis that determined space availability in each elementary alternative school. Offers will be monitored for acceptance.

8 Seats offered to Indigenous students and siblings of current elementary alternative school students who will return in the fall due to new seats added where there were previously no seats. Offers will be monitored for acceptance.

Remedy: Proportions by Group:

  • Siblings of Current Elementary Alternative School Students - 15%
  • Underrepresented Groups i.e., Racialized Groups, 2SLGBTQIA+, Students with Disabilities - 47%
  • All Other Applicants– 36%

Please note: The number of seats available at each school will continue to shift slightly up and/or down as the student placement process continues until June 16. In some cases, there were no applicants for available seats. There were also cases where there were applicants where no seats were available.
