Google Translate Limitations Disclaimer

The electronic translation service on the Toronto District School Board website is hosted by Google Translate, a third party service. The TDSB does not guarantee or warrant the reliability, accuracy or completeness of any translated information.

The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 100 languages, but does not capture all languages or dialects.

The basic translation goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material. Before you act on translated information, we encourage you to confirm any facts that are important to you or may affect any decisions you make.

The Toronto District School Board is committed to equity and community engagement, and by providing this tool, we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English.

International Languages – Elementary/African Heritage Program

2020 Summer Program

This summer, the International Languages – Elementary / African Heritage Program will be offering language classes to students (TDSB and non TDSB) Kindergarten to Grade 8. Students will take part in a remote/at home learning. Each day, they will have live face-to-face interactive lessons with their instructor and other students for approximately 30 minutes. Activities will be focused on building student’s abilities in oral communication, reading and writing. Students will be provided with engaging activities on the theme “ Life on Earth: We are all connected”. They will also be encouraged to get up, get outside and do hands-on and research based activities throughout the summer program. Please note that a minimum of 23 students is required to open a language class.

Please note that there is a possibility that language learning may move from remote learning to a physical classroom. If instruction moves to a physical classroom, you will be contacted. Remote learning option will still be available for families who wish to continue learning from home.

What: International Languages Elementary/African Heritage summer program offers language classes to Kindergarten to Grade 8 students. No language background knowledge is necessary. Please note that a minimum of 23 students is required to open a language class.
When: July 6 to 31, 2020 (Monday to Friday)
Who: Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 students (as of Sept 2019)
Cost Free for July 2020 only
Where: Language classes will run remotely or from home. There is a possibility that language learning may move from remote learning to a physical classroom. If instruction moves to a physical classroom, you will be contacted. Remote learning option will still be available for families who wish to continue learning from home.
Time: 9:30 -12 pm or 1:30 – 4 pm (see below)
9:30-12 pm African Heritage, Albanian, American Sign Language, Amharic, Aramaic, Armenian, Azerbaijan, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Creole, Dutch, Edo, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Karen, Kurdish, Macedonian, Mongolian, Marathi, Nepalese, Pashtu, Portuguese, Russian, Shona, Sinhalese, Swedish, Tagalog, Telugu, Tibetan, Tigrinya, Turkish, Twi, Vietnamese.
Parents can choose one language only in this session.
1:30-4 pm Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Dari, Farsi/Persian, Korean, Mandarin Simplified, Mandarin Traditional, Punjabi, Romanian, Sanskrit, Serbian, Somali, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu

Registration

Registration is available online only for all languages except African Heritage. To register for African Heritage class, please call 416 254-8521.

Registration will open from now until Wednesday, June 24, 2020. In order to complete online registration, you must have your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN). The Ontario Education Number can be found in your child’s report card. There is a possibility that language learning may move from remote learning to a physical classroom. Therefore, each language is tied to a school. Remote learning only option will still be available for families who wish to continue learning from home.

Parent/Guardian may choose up to 2 languages (one language from the 9:30 to 12 pm session and a second language in the 1:30 to 4 pm session).
