Vaping and Cell Phone Dependency Awareness Campaign

Parents/Caregivers Let’s Talk: Vaping & Screen Time—What’s Really Going On?
Hey parents and caregivers—did you know that over 2.5 million middle and high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2023? Or, that teens now spend an average of 7–9 hours a day on screens, not counting schoolwork?

Vaping might seem like "just a phase" or harmless fun, but most vape products contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can affect brain development. At the same time, constant screen time—especially on social media—can lead to anxiety, sleep issues, and low self-esteem.  The good news? You don’t need to be a tech expert nor a health guru to make a difference. Your awareness, your questions, and your presence are powerful tools. Start the convo. Set the tone. Your guidance matters more than you think

The TDSB is rolling out a campaign on vaping and cell phone dependency in alignment with the Ministry's Policy/Program Memorandum 128: The Provincial Code of Conduct and School Board Codes of Conduct that demonstrates a commitment for the Ministry to support the safety, security and positive school climates that support the achievement and well-being of students in Ontario. The campaign:

  • Provide parents/caregivers with the skills to talk to their children about vaping and cellphone dependency using evidence-informed strategies to support conversations;
  • Connect parents/caregivers with other parents/caregivers, to have conversations on how they can best support their children.
