Arrival & Reporting

Arrival

International students and their parents/custodians are strongly encouraged to make necessary planning for travel, homestay and other logistic arrangements prior to their arrival in Toronto. Families and students are also advised to visit the official website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and contact the airlines for the latest updates on travel restrictions.

We expect all students to arrive in Toronto and report to the TDSB approximately 2 weeks before the program starts.

English & Math Assessments

New secondary students (Grade 9-12) from outside the Province of Ontario are required to complete English and Math assessments before reporting to the TDSB. Two separate emails will be sent to the student, parents and custodian by our assessment service provider to invite the student to complete the online assessments within a specified time period:

Intake ESL Assessment Math Assessment
February November 1 – January 1
September June 1 – August 1

All Grade 9-12 students are expected to complete the assessments independently within the specified timelines. Please note no special preparation is needed to take the tests. Failure to complete the assessments on time may delay the reporting procedure and potentially affect the student’s registration and course selection at school.

Please contact our office at StudyToronto@TDSB.on.ca if a student does not receive the email invitation to do the assessments. Please include the student’s full name and TISP ID number in the subject line of the email.

Kindergarten to Grade 8 students do not need to do English or Math assessment.

ALL new students must complete the in-person reporting procedure at the International Students and Admissions Office before registration at school.

We encourage students and families to report on time to our office (5050 Yonge Street 1st Floor International Students office or 5075 Yonge Street, 10th Floor – please check the dates below) accompanied by their custodians or parents. If the student is 18 years or older they may complete reporting themselves.

To complete the reporting process, students are required to have the following documents and information ready:

  • Copy of student’s passport (photo page only)
  • Copy of student’s valid study permit/visa
  • Most recent school reports/transcripts from home country (notarized with English translation)
  • Notarized IRCC Custodian/Parent Declaration Forms (mandatory only for students living with the custodian or homestay)
  • Homestay information (mandatory only for secondary students living with homestay)
  • Two proofs of address in Toronto (mandatory only for elementary students)
  • Student’s immunization record
  • Information of emergency contact in Toronto
  • Newcomer Profile Form

The reporting procedure is considered complete only after all the required documents are verified by our staff and the student/custodian receives the reporting package by email, including the emergency medical insurance information. The same package will also be sent to the school by email.

Registration at School

After reporting has been completed, the custodian/parent can proceed with contacting the school (by phone or email) on behalf of the student to make an appointment for registration and course selection after reporting has been completed. The custodian/parent must go to the school with the student for in-person registration.

Orientation

All new students and their custodians or parents are required to participate in this important information session. Our Guidance Counsellors for International Students (GCIS) team will share latest updates on school programs, renewal requirements, TDSB support services for international students, and how to use the emergency insurance package. We will also reserve time to answer questions from the students and parents/custodians.

Late Reporting

We understand that due to various reasons some students may not be able to report to the TDSB before the new semester starts, e.g., study permit or visa approval delay, flights availability or personal emergencies. If you cannot report to the International Students and Admissions Office on or before July 26, 2024, please complete late reporting by going to 5050 Yonge Street – 1st Floor International Students and Admissions Office during normal office hours.

For the September 2024 semester, the latest time that secondary students are allowed to report to the TDSB will be September 20, 2024, and for elementary students it will be October 04, 2024. Students who cannot report by this date are strongly encouraged to request a deferral for their studies. For elementary students that plan to report later than this date, we encourage the families to contact our office by email and we will communicate with the schools to accommodate their requests.
