When it comes to confidence, the kids of Amesbury Middle School are on a roll.
The school sent two Grade 7 students to observe the Toronto District School Board’s high school Student Senate - and they came back Senate members themselves; elected to be the voice of middle school students across the whole northwest of the city.

He was in Grade 9, but he read at a Grade 7 level. He could de-code words, but the overall meaning didn’t sink in. Books were boring, he said. He had no confidence in class. Reading felt like punishment.

Student-Led Kindergarten Classes at Charles E. Webster PS
As you look around the kindergarten classrooms you will see: some students making decisions about what their drama centre should become, some are reading self-published books to their peers and others are sorting through leaves and acorns they have just found during their nature walk. It may not be obvious to many, but there has been a big shift in the Kindergarten classrooms at Charles E. Webster and the students are embracing it.

I am a Swansea Student
Three learning tracks at Swansea Jr and Sr Public School had the unintended consequence of “silos” within the building. But a focus on building community and integrating students and staff has had a big impact on student engagement.
“We saw the inequities and the divisions three tracks of English, Extended French and Late Extended French were causing in our community,” recalls Principal Mary Salvarinas, “and we felt there was an opportunity – and a need – to find a way to bring students and staff together.”
