Sir Alexander Mackenzie (1764 –1820) was a Scottish explorer who moved to Montreal in 1776. He obtained a job with the North West Company, on whose behalf he traveled to Lake Athabasca and founded Fort Chipewyan. He set out by canoe and discovered the Mackenzie River in 1789. In 1804, he was elected as a Member of Parliament to represent the area of Huntingdon in Lower Canada.
