Sir Oliver Mowat (1820 - 1903) was the Premier of Ontario from 1872 to 1896. Mowat became John A. Macdonald’s first articled law student. He was admitted to the bar in 1841 and quickly became a successful equity lawyer. Mowat was also a Father of Confederation. He served as Premier and Attorney General until 1896 when he was appointed to the Senate and became Federal Minister of Justice. Knighted in 1892, he left Ottawa in 1897 to become Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario.
