Toronto District School Board

Gay-Straight Alliances

As the largest school Board in Canada, we represent nearly 600 schools and serve more than 250,000 students each year.  We are proud that 60 of our schools have active student-led trans-positive Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) that show tremendous leadership, advocacy and support in their schools.

In 2011, our Board of Trustees officially declared themselves a Gay-Straight Alliance in support of safe and positive schools in the TDSB.

Outstanding GSAs are honoured every year through the Director’s Gay-Straight Alliance Awards. Each year this award will see three outstanding alliances receive $1,000 to support their work creating safe spaces for queer and trans youth and their allies, projects in anti-homophobia and anti-transphobia actions and education, and building student leaders in political action.

Speak to your school principal or staff from our Gender-Based Violence Prevention Office if you want to find out further information about the GSA in your school.
