Dear Minister Lecce,
I am writing to you today to share deep concern, on behalf of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), as we continue to grapple with significant financial challenges following the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the pandemic, the TDSB did everything possible to ensure the health and safety of all school community members, while also providing the best academic experience possible for students, supporting mental health and well-being, and considering the needs of our families and staff. In fact, the TDSB – already facing budget shortfalls prior to the pandemic as a result of funding gaps – incurred approximately $70.1 million in pandemic-related costs that were not covered by Ministry of Education funding.
As you know, Canadian children and youth are facing exceptional challenges following the pandemic. Government funding and support for schools and students was essential during the height of the pandemic, but it is still critically needed as we look to meet the evolving needs of our students, and enable them to achieve their full potential and thrive in their communities.
On behalf of Canada’s largest school board, I am calling upon all levels of government to work together to invest in Canadian children and youth, particularly following the disruptions caused by COVID-19. I am urging you to invest more in youth mental health, school nutrition, community safety, public health, as well as in meaningful steps toward Truth and Reconciliation.
I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this request further. I am available at your earliest convenience.
Sincerely,
Rachel Chernos Lin
Chair, Toronto District School Board
