The Government of Ontario has announced funding for the construction of a new elementary school in Etobicoke.
The $33.4 million will be used to build the new Etobicoke City Centre Elementary School at 160 Silverhill Drive in Etobicoke, which will create 823 student spaces and 88 childcare spaces.
“The central Etobicoke area is currently experiencing a rapid change in population and residential development,” said TDSB Director of Education Colleen Russell-Rawlins. “A new school has been approved for construction to accommodate the growing number of students in the community. The modern school building will provide a welcoming and engaging environment for hundreds of nearby students to achieve, belong, and thrive. Additionally, it will help alleviate the space pressures on other local schools that are now over capacity.”
This investment addresses critical accommodation needs in the area and supports the TDSB goal of modernizing learning spaces. The targeted focus on high-priority accommodation needs reflects a strategic approach to improving schools where they are most urgently required. This investment is a significant step forward, given the challenges posed by the district's size, student population, and rapid residential growth.
The announcement was made on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the current site of the Etobicoke Secondary Alternative School, which will be relocated as part of the construction project. TDSB Chair Rachel Chernos Lin and Trustee Patrick Nunziata were joined by Minister of Education Stephen Lecce and MPP Christine Hogarth.
