TDSB Statement Re: Attacks on Israel

Categories: News

Our thoughts are with all those impacted by the deadly attacks on Israel over the weekend and the ongoing violence in the region. At the Toronto District School Board, we serve many students, staff and communities, including Jewish, Palestinian and Israeli, who have been impacted by decades of conflict in the region.

As we reopen tomorrow, we want to re-commit to making our classrooms and offices affirming, respectful, and inclusive places to learn and work. As educators, it is our duty and obligation to uphold human rights and to protect the humanity of every individual so that they feel a sense of belonging at school and work.

Some students and staff may need extra support in the days and weeks ahead. Individuals will be impacted differently based on their lived experiences. Students, in particular, may be confronted with horrible images of war through various types of media. Parents/Guardians/Caregivers and students are encouraged to contact their school principal for more information about additional mental health supports through our Professional Support Services department. They may also wish to seek assistance from a qualified medical or mental health practitioner. TDSB Professional Support Services staff have also prepared tips that may be helpful in speaking with children who are experiencing difficulties. Staff can access Mental Health and Well-Being Resources and/or can contact the TDSB’s Employee and Family Assistance Program should they require additional support.

As a community of learners, we are committed to continuing to provide inclusive, empathetic and supportive environments. As part of this commitment, we will continue to educate our students against hate in all its forms in the hope of creating a more just and peaceful world for everyone. Please join us in this important endeavour.
