Dr. Rita Cox visited kindergarteners at Dr Rita Cox - Kina Minagok Public School as a special guest storyteller to share her love of reading with students.
Dr. Cox began her career as a children’s librarian in 1960 and, in 1972, became the Head of the Parkdale branch, a role she held for over 20 years. Dr. Cox shared animated stories with students and got to hear some original stories written by them.
Dr. Cox was a community leader who championed children’s literacy, and the school is proud to honor her legacy through its new name. The decision was made to rename the school in 2022, following community consultation and recommendations made by a School Naming Committee. Kina Minagok is an Indigenous phrase that translates to "all grows well together", and signifies the school and community’s role in nurturing the growth of students.
