At this year's Skills Ontario Competition, students from the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) impressively took home 22 medals.

This provincial-level competition offers a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their skills in various trades and earn a spot in the national competition, WorldSkills Competition.

Our student competitors finished with nine bronze medals, six silver medals, and seven gold medals over the course of three days. The top medalists will now be representing Team Ontario nationally in Winnipeg later this month.

In addition, the TDSB was presented with The School Board Award of Distinction from Skills Ontario, an award given to a school board in Ontario for showing strong dedication and continued commitment to supporting students interested in pursuing a wide range of careers in the skilled trades and technologies.

To determine the award recipient, Skills Ontario reviewed the performance for each secondary-school competitor in the top ten rankings, who scored over 60%, and tallied the earned points. The award is presented annually to the school board with the highest score.

“The Skills [Ontario] competitions are an outstanding way for students to engage with hands-on learning and the problem-solving process, and to learn experientially about skilled trades and apprenticeship careers,” said James Corbett, Coordinator of TDSB Experiential Learning and Student Engagement. “Students also engage with global competencies through their participation and involvement in the contests, learn about teamwork and collaboration, time and resource management, and have a chance to meet other students their age from across Canada when participating in the National Competition."

Congratulations to this year’s winners and we wish Team Ontario the best of luck!
