Portage Trail Community School recently hosted an inspiring career fair, welcoming back a group of alumni to share their academic and professional journeys with current students. This event aimed to provide students with insights into various career paths, and to inspire them with real-life success stories. In addition to discussing their pathways and careers, the alumni also shared personal stories about some of the struggles they faced growing up. They delved into authentic experiences that current students could relate to, making their stories even more impactful.

Growing up in a difficult environment, Fernando Morales, a former graduate of Portage Trail, experienced hardships that could have easily derailed his future. Refusing to let his circumstances define him, Fernando worked tirelessly to turn his life around. Today, Fernando Morales holds the position of Treasury Solutions Specialist at RBC. Fernando emphasized the importance of not just surviving but thriving, despite the odds. His journey to a successful career at RBC was an inspiring example for Portage Trail students and anyone facing adversity.

Gregory Morris is an inspiring example of dedication and athletic prowess, tracing his athletic roots back to Portage Trail. Taking a proactive approach to his education and future, he was determined to seize every opportunity available. Gregory made the necessary connections and applications to attend multiple high schools and post-secondary institutions, ensuring he had access to the best training and competition available. Gregory embarked on a professional career in football with the Canadian Football League (CFL) and won the Grey Cup with the Edmonton Elks. After retiring from the CFL, he sought a new challenge and is currently on the Canadian Bobsled Team, training for the Winter Olympics. Students learned that opportunities don’t always come knocking on your door. It's important to take the initiative to look for opportunities and mentors to support you throughout your journey.

The career fair offered students a glimpse into the diverse paths to success. By showcasing the various achievements of its alumni and their journeys of overcoming adversity, the school not only celebrated their successes but also reinforced the message that with hard work and determination, current students can achieve their dreams. Many students expressed newfound enthusiasm and clarity regarding their future career aspirations. The opportunity to interact with alumni who once walked the same halls gave students a sense of possibility and motivation for their future.
