Google Translate Limitations Disclaimer

The electronic translation service on the Toronto District School Board website is hosted by Google Translate, a third party service. The TDSB does not guarantee or warrant the reliability, accuracy or completeness of any translated information.

The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 100 languages, but does not capture all languages or dialects.

The basic translation goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material. Before you act on translated information, we encourage you to confirm any facts that are important to you or may affect any decisions you make.

International Certificate Program

The world is getting even smaller and we want to set you up to be successful global citizens.

Using our current courses and activities, the International Certificate will recognize high school students who build global competencies through studies and other initiatives, in and outside the classroom.

How can you earn an International Certificate through your school?

Certificate requirements:

1:  Connecting Language and Culture

a)    Participate in a three hour session to:

-          Explore global competencies and what it means to be an informed, engaged citizen

-          Assess levels of intercultural knowledge

-          Develop an understanding of the skills and tools needed to investigate the world, recognize different viewpoints, communicate ideas and take action

b)   Successfully complete at least ONE provincially accredited full credit course (110 hours) in one of the Ministry’s international languages (other than English or French).


Continuing & International Education will offer at least one international language in each quadrant of the city per semester


c)    For students who are newcomers to Canada during their high school years, any language credits in English as a Second Language (ESL), English Literacy Development (ELD), French as a Second Language (FSL) and International Languages (IL) will be considered based on individual circumstances


d)   Students may make a Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR) application to challenge for a level 1, 2, and/or 3 credit in an International Language course which is taught in the TDSB and is developed from a provincial policy document


e)    International Language Elementary participation and other international language learning will be considered on an individual basis


f)     Other language credits may also be considered at the student’s request


2: World and Interdisciplinary Studies

a)    Successfully complete FOUR of the following courses.

-          One course must be from List 1 (Grade 12 level courses with a specified international focus)

-          Three other courses can be from List 1 or List 2 (Grade 11 or 12 level courses with an international focus)

*Some of these courses are also available in French Immersion and Advanced Placement.

-          Many other credit courses, including Co-operative Education and some Interdisciplinary Studies credits with an international focus, may qualify to meet the coursework requirements, with prior approval

-          Not all of the eligible courses will be available at every school but additional credits can be obtained through Continuing & International Education’s night and summer school programs or through e-Learning


-          Obtain at least one credit from List 1 AND two additional credits from those listed above, plus another international language credit, with prior approval


b)   Internationalize two culminating activities from other courses

-          Adapt two major culminating activities in other courses between grades 9 and 12 by taking a specific international, intercultural or global perspective

Example: You may explore an assignment that has an international focus for a math class*

*You will need to discuss options with your course teacher and the international certificate coordinator.


3: Local and Global Mindedness

a)    Participate in activities or provide a service to local groups with an international initiative (50 hours)

     i.          School clubs with an international focus (such as a Model UN, Multicultural Club, Global Development Club etc.) or expand clubs to highlight global connections (such as Distributive Education Clubs of America DECA, Environmental Club, Social Justice/Equity Club)

    ii.          Local community or international organizations that deal with global initiatives (Amnesty International, Dignitas International, Red Cross, Free the Children, etc.)

   iii.          International programs within the TDSB (such as Adult ESL, International Languages Elementary & African Heritage Programs and international ESL summer programs)

   iv.          Hosting an international student in your home (through homestay, or a student exchange etc.)

    v.          Other activities may qualify with prior approval


b)   Focus and travel abroad with an intentional learning goal and/or study internationally anytime during grades 9 through 12 (1 semester - 1 year)

     i.        Exchange or study abroad programs

    ii.        International travel through school-approved trips

   iii.        Personal travel with a purpose during official school holidays and with a specific international learning focus (prior approval required)


NOTE: International travel is not required to complete the International Certificate


4: Understanding of Self and Others

a)    Participate in the TDSB-International Certificate e-Community

     i.          Join a cohort of learners who understand the importance of being globally competent online

    ii.          Engage in discussions, network, and work collaboratively with peers located around the TDSB, using discussion forums, text chatting, and video and audio conferencing

 iii. Interact regularly with coordinator, receive individualized feedback and input

   iv.         Reflect on experience and perspective, and increase their ability to think more openly and critically


b)   Summarize your experience and growth 

     i.          Build an International Certificate Portfolio and record the personal importance and impact of each component at various stages of the program

    ii.          Maintain a record of  completed work 

   iii.          Using your method of choice - essay, video, journal or blog - showcase how the program has contributed in your development of global competencies, and influenced personal thinking about intercultural knowledge, international issues and global citizenship

   iv.          Summary may include:

-          Reflections on the interconnected world through culture, language, relationships, and interactions

-          Development of global competencies through local, short-term and/or long-term experiences

-          Recognition of the value of learning another language

-          Demonstrating an understanding of aspects of a variety of cultures

-          An awareness of global issues

-          Explaining the importance of being a globally informed citizen in today’s world

-          Reflections on your own personal growth throughout the process
