F H Miller Junior Public School's Mission Statement

F.H. Miller Junior Public School is located on the northwest corner of Caledonia Road and Rogers Road. The school was build in 1926 and was named for the first York School Board Chairman, Fred H. Miller. There have been several additions to the original building over the years and a new state-of-the art gymnasium and adventure playground were added in 2003.  Our school is wheelchair accessible to the lower level. Through a Playground Greening Project we acquired a gazebo, many trees and shrubs, an updated Kindergarten play area and a cycling path. Recently, a play structure was added to the Kindergarten area.

School Focus

Our mission is to enable all students to reach high levels of achievement and to acquire the knowledge, skills and values they need to become responsible members of a democratic society. We are committed to providing a safe, positive and inclusive environment for all students, staff and parents through consistent practices and procedures.  Through our Professional Learning Communities in Literacy and Numeracy, we are focused on initiatives that will promote improved academic achievement, well-being and equity. We build partnerships with parents to support student learning at home, beginning with our "Welcome to Kindergarten" evening.

More Information About F H Miller Junior Public School

Literacy and Numeracy

Student achievement is supported through the use of deep learning practices and technology integration. These strategies help students develop key global competencies and improve core learning skills in literacy and numeracy. Engaging students in inquiry based learning and real-world problem solving helps them to foster collaboration and prepares them for the future.

Information Technology

Technology enables teachers to present information in ways that are highly motivating and engaging (G-Suite, CS First, Scratch). We challenge students to use higher level thinking skills that go beyond traditional methods of instruction.

Students are able to connect and share beyond the class (e.g., Virtual Author Visits, Twitter) and become aware of global issues (e.g., WE Initiatives).

Support For Student Achievement

Our School Support Team addresses the academic and social/emotional needs of students at risk. Our Resource Program is the first step for early intervention. Our Home School Program(HSP) supports students with the highest learning needs.

We provide student agendas to promote home/school communication and student success by focusing on recording, tracking and time management skills.

Assessment and Evaluation

DRA and CASI reading assessments, Marie Clay Observation Surveys, Ministry Exemplars, Ontario Writing Assessment (OWA), teacher/student co-constructed learning goals, success criteria, descriptive feedback, student generated rubrics and the use of manipulatives all are used to support student achievement in Literacy.

EQAO testing results help us to determine areas of concentration to improve learning in both Literacy and Numeracy. We also use Number Talks and Leaps and Bounds to assess learning goals in Numeracy for our learners.

We invite a variety of workshop opportunities into the school to enhance our curriculum delivery. In 2018-19 we have invited Arts Express for our Literacy Day and African History celebrations, an indoor Snowboarding session for our K-3 learners, and X-movement for a dance workshop for the entire school and our families. Our Welcome-to-Kindergarten Night helps Junior Kindergarten students and their parents with the transition to school.

WHAT SETS US APART

We are a small community school and as such we have the privilege of being able to really get to know all of our students. Our library houses a well-rounded book collection reflecting the diversity of our student population. Our school also features an excellent gym and murals created by former students. All our classes have access to iPads and Chromebooks. Ongoing communication between staff and parents is supported through the use of student agendas, telephone calls, parent/teacher interviews, classroom and school newsletters. Special nights such as Curriculum Night and  Welcome to Kindergarten  provide opportunities for parents to learn more about our school and find answers to any questions they may have. Students receive a daily nutritious snack through the Morning Meal Program.  We offer a supervised lunch and Safe Arrival Program and have five safety cameras installed around the school, including one at our front entrance.  Many cultures are represented and celebrated. Students are recognized through our monthly Character Assemblies.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We collaborate with community/social agencies including Public Health, Macaulay Child Development Centre, Children's Aid Society, Royal Canadian Legion, Toronto Police Service, Child Development Institute, Yorktown Family Services, Evelyn Gregory Public Library, Toronto  Parks and Recreation and York Lions Club. The school is supported by parent volunteers. School Council members support our school by organizing fundraising activities such as:  Bake Sales, Chocolate Almond sales, Year End Festival.  Parents are invited to Curriculum Night, Remembrance Day Assembly,Winter Concert, Math/Literacy Nights, Grade 6 Graduation, Book Fairs, Student Recognition Assemblies, Education Week Events. Students fund raise for WE projects. Teachers provide mentorship to student teachers and early childhood educators in training from recognized training facilities.
