Malvern Collegiate Institute's Mission Statement

Welcome to Malvern, one of Toronto’s oldest high schools, serving the Beach community and French Extended/Immersion programs. We offer a wide range of programs in visual arts, drama, music, social justice, and athletics. Our EF/FI programs offer students the opportunity to explore the diverse Francophone cultures of the world, all while developing their proficiency in the language. Malvern teachers model a variety of perspectives and approaches to language learning, making every effort to ensure that all students have the opportunity to be successful. Students also have the chance to participate in French enrichment opportunities, such as speaking in the Concours d’art oratoire or challenging the prestigious DELF competency exam.

The Arts and Experiential Learning

Malvern has a vibrant Arts department, with Drama, Instrumental/Vocal and Visual Arts classes continuing to the Gr. 12 level. Students will experience performances, art shows, productions and extra-curricular ensembles including a marching band. Students engage with the theoretical, historical and practical aspects of the Arts. Malvern also offers many popular course options in Technological Design, Business, and Computer Science. These courses allow students to apply theoretical knowledge to solving challenging, real-world problems. Senior students have the opportunity to participate in co-op placements to explore career interests.

English

The core English coursesfocuses on critical thinking, communication and digital literacy. We offer Media Studies, Grade 12 Writer's Craft, and Film Studies & Production. We've added to our texts by including BIPOC authors. NBE3U/3C has replaced ENG3U/C to exploring a variety of literary, oral and cultural forms from First Nation, Metis and Inuit culture in Canada.  

Cdn. & World Studies/Social Sciences & Humanities

Core courses in Geography, History, Civics and the Social Sciences enhance students’ understanding of Canada and our world while developing research, inquiry and communication skills. Senior courses include: Travel and Tourism, World Issues, World Religions, US History, World History, Law, Anthropology, Sociology & Psychology, Philosophy, Equity and Social Justice.

Mathematics and Science

In Math, explore the mysteries of numbers & shapes, discovering their connections to solve problems. From equations to patterns, it’s all about making sense of the world around us. In Science, whether building bridges in Engineering Club, dissecting pigs in Malvern Medicine, or planting in Environmental Science, gain a new appreciation of the nature of the world.

Health and Physical Education

Our Healthy Active Living courses encourage a lifelong pursuit of physical activity and develop skills required to lead a healthy lifestyle. Students may choose to focus on improving their personal fitness & knowledge of training by opting for Personal Fitness Activities in grades 10/11/12.  Kinesiology and Leadership courses will be offered to grade 12 students.

Our SHSM program is in Health and Wellness as many of our students are interested in a career in the Health industry.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Fostering a sense of belonging is a focus at Malvern. Our community stands together to recognize that we are all entitled to a life of equality, dignity and respect — a life free from discrimination. All students should feel safe at school and deserve a positive school climate that is inclusive and accepting. We take pride in engaging students in a vibrant, extra-curricular life. Malvern has around 30 clubs & councils in areas ranging from Arts to STEM to Business to clubs that focus on equity and social justice issues. Our school is an Anne Hope Award winning school for Excellence in Human Rights and a gold level Eco-School. Our student centred Leadership Council is a group providing school-wide initiatives which are always grounded in the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.

The Black Knights have over 100 years of athletic excellence and Malvern's strong sporting tradition is still alive today. Malvern has over 20 teams such as football, hockey, baseball, cross-country, swimming, rugby, track and field, soccer & volleyball. From sports to the arts; to culture and social justice, there is a place for everyone at Malvern.

WHAT SETS US APART

Malvern focuses on providing as many opportunities for student engagement as possible. We are a school with strong traditions, but have also changed to meet the needs of today’s diverse students. We work closely with our parents and guardians through our Parent & School Council and work as a community to help assist new students find their place in our vibrant student life. Head Start to High School is a day which provides an orientation to all new students and includes various team-building activities. Our Peerleaders take an active role in working with our grade 9s in helping them feel welcome throughout the year. Malvern also hosts an extra-curricular club fair, ensuring new students are exposed to all the wonderful opportunities that are available to become involved in school life. There are evening programs for the community focusing on academics, extracurricular offerings as well as presentations on successfully navigating the world as both student and caregiver. Malvern has supportive staff and is committed to making a student’s experience the best it can be.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Malvern's School Council is composed of a dedicated group of parents working to ensure student success and help build a positive school environment. Malvern also maintains strong links with its alumni group: the Red and Black Society. This group meets regularly and supports a variety of school and community activities.
 
Parents and alumni support the school by working on a variety of initiatives that support parents and enhance student learning. A safe, inclusive & equitable learning climate is essential if students are to succeed in school.
