J G Workman Public School's Mission Statement
J.G. Workman Public School is located on the southeast corner of Birchmount Road and Danforth Road. The school was first opened in 1949 and was named after the Chairman of the Scarborough Collegiate Board at that time.
This neighbourhood school serves approximately 210 students representing various language groups and countries.
J.G. Workman Public School offers regular programs from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8.
Literacy
We learn to read, so that we can read to learn.
- Improve student achievement in literacy through a variety of programs and professional development.
- Focus on balanced literacy programs for all students to promote strong independent readers and writers adept at higher level thinking.
- Track student data using the DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) and CASI (Junior Reading Assessment) to monitor student progress and determine student learning needs.
- Use descriptive feedback to help students progress to a higher level of achievement.

Our focus is to improve student achievement in numeracy through a variety of programs and professional development.
- Use the Teaching Critical Pathway to plan and deliver focused instruction in mathematics.

Information Communication Technology

Pathways
Continue to facilitate Grade 8 to 9 transition by:
- visiting feeder high schools;
- offering transition evening to inform parents and students of various options for high schools;
- working with itinerant guidance to look at different pathways.
Character Education
Character is what we do when no one is looking.
- Focus on the ten TDSB character attributes that are an integral part of our teaching and learning throughout the year.
- Continue to use Tribes and various anti-bullying programs to foster empathy and responsible behaviour .
- Recognize and celebrate student success at monthly Great Golden Bear Award Assemblies.

GO TEAM
At J.G. Workman Public School, we encourage student leadership. The students have a variety of opportunities to participate in many extra curricular and leadership activities.
- Me-to-We team is actively involved in a "Free The Children" project to build a well in rural China.
- The Athletic Council organizes house leagues.
- The Athletic Council organizes house leagues.
- The Eco Team takes on initiatives to promote recycling, energy conservation and playground stewardship. They are working towards one thousand acts of green in the school community.
- The students publish the monthly newsletter, fundraise for worthy causes, and promote positive school climate through spirit days.
- Other leadership roles include hall monitors, office helpers and daily announcers.
- The students participate in folk dancing, scrabble club, chess club, yoga, talent show, primary & junior rock band, and other extracurricular activities organized by staff.

WHAT SETS US APART
J.G. Workman Public School is a small school with a diverse parent community. It is seen as the "community school" where the majority of students live in the neighbourhood. Thanks to the School Council fundraising initiatives, we have been able to provide enrichment activities for our students, such as field trips, skating, Scientists in the School, theatre and musical performances. Our staff believe that all students can learn and reach their potential, given time and support. At J.G. Workman Public School, our dedicated staff, supportive parents and respectful students all work together to make the school a happening place, where we are all learners and leaders!
PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Parent Involvement:
- A committed and highly involved school council with strong community links that involve in fundraising activities and school projects.
- Regular monthly school council meeting is held to discuss school matters.
- Parent volunteers are welcome on class trips and in other areas of the school where needed.
Community Links:
- Visits to the public library, community centre and skating arena.
- Regular contact with the community police liaison officer from 41 Division.
- Fundraising for a variety of local charities, eg. holiday food drive, Terry Fox Run, Heart & Stroke Association, U.N.I.C.E.F., etc.
- Partnership with colleges and universities to provide teacher training placements, as well as placements for Co-op students, Child & Youth Worker, Early Childhood Educator, and Nursing students.
