Ionview Public School's Mission Statement

Ionview PS is a K – 8 school located near Birchmount Road and Eglinton Avenue in Scarborough. The school opened in 1953. While some families have been connected to Ionview for many years our Settlement Worker also welcomes many new Canadians each year. Our school is committed to educating every student in our care by providing a learning environment that promotes the development of academic excellence, the growth of self esteem, personal responsibility and a connection to our local and global community.

A walk down our main hall highlights many awards celebrating excellence, effort, and citizenship. Exemplary student work is always displayed prominently, as a visual reminder of our primary purpose - to educate and achieve.

One of the goals of our school is to create an inclusive school where all students, parents and staff feel they can make a difference. The Ionview Recognition Assemblies  give every child an opportunity to be recognized for their unique talents or skills. Our motto “be the change you wish to see in the world” means we can make a difference if we work together.

The Music Program

Ionview students love music! Our music program offers students an opportunity to experience, listen to, create, compose and perform music from many cultures and musical genres with a focus on Orff and Kodaly pedagogy. Students have the opportunity to take part in one of our choirs, strings or band program from Grade 5 -8.

Students perform skills learned in school assemblies, evening performances and music festivals.

We are very fortunate to have two music itinerant music teachers at Ionview. Mr. Poole teaches band and Mr. Wall teaches strings to our Junior/Intermediate students. These groups practice twice a week - often over their lunch hour. Our band students participate in the TDSB's music symposium each Spring.

Nutritional Programs

Working in collaboration with the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, and a dedicated team of volunteers, Ionview PS is able to offer a morning snack to all students. Our present records indicate this program is very successful as participation is close to 95% for this program and no child is denied the opportunity to participate due to financial need.

Caring, Community and Culture

Ionview PS has a vibrant community with more than 20 languages spoken in our school. While many of our students have been born in Canada over half speak a language other than English at home. Our goal  is to continue to investigate ways to engage families in school life by offering many community events and to ensure our activities are responsive to our local cultures.

We have seen an increase of participation by families at Ionview PS events in the past years: School Advisory Council, Pizza Lunches, Volunteer Reading, Parent Workshops.

Our partnership with Toronto Public Health's Into Kids Health Program has been very successful. Every student received a free metal water bottle (that fits our new water bottle re-fill station), students are being more mindful about drinking fewer sugary drinks. This benefits both our students and the environment!

Pathways

Support is presently provided for our Grade 8 students to make informed choices on their high school options through our information meetings for Grade 8 to 9 in the fall, visits to local high schools and through our guidance counselor, Ms. Edwards.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten

At Ionview PS we have many ways to support our young children entering school. Our Kindergarten teachers collaborate with our local Early Years Centre to support our Junior Kindergarten children and their parents with entering school. The Ontario Early Years program offers preschool and readiness programs in the school throughout the year.

And finally, our Kindergarten staff hold a “Welcome to Kindergarten” workshop for children and their parents. Support for our families in this transition to school is an important part of school success and a focus of our teachers and staff.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Throughout the year students have the opportunity to join clubs that promote leadership skills – Student Council, Environment Club, Girl’s Club, Girls On The Move, Recess Leaders, PALS (Peer Assisted Learning) and the Grade 7 & 8 Me to We Committee. We have student ambassadors and student master of ceremonies at our presentations and assemblies.

WHAT SETS US APART

One of the goals of our school is to create an inclusive school where all students, parents and staff feel they can make a difference. The Ionview Recognition Assemblies and  awards give every child an opportunity to be recognized for their unique talents or skills. Our motto “be the change you wish to see in the world” means that we can make a difference if we all work together.

Students are also taught to "Think Globally; Act Locally" as they consider ways in which they can help make this world a better place.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

We have increased our volunteers at Ionview PS and if you walk through our school you will see volunteers in all areas such as our snack program, ten minute read program for primary students, helping in classrooms and even coaching teams. As well, our parents are invited to participate on the School Advisory Council, Staffing Committee and the Safe and Caring Schools Committee.
