North West Secondary Alternative School's Mission Statement
Location: Steeles & Bathurst

Students who choose North West Secondary Alternative School (NWSAS) are looking for a unique school experience designed to accommodate their learning style, at least 16 years old, and have a minimum of 10 credits including 5 compulsory grade 9 credits. We support students in their re-engagement through experiential learning opportunities and an integrated approach to learning. NWSAS offers school supports including guidance, student success, mental health/wellness support and counseling through our child and youth counsellor. Our staff builds strong working relationships to ensure that students excel in our small, caring, and mutually respectful learning environment.
NWSAS Student Success Commitments

Students will:
- Make an effort to attend class on a regular basis
- Complete assignments to the best of my ability
- Follow the school and classroom rules so that all can learn and be safe
- Develop the tools and resources necessary to reach the goals I set to become successful in school and life
- Show respect for all members of the NWSAS community-their lives, property, environment. This includes respect for diversity, and the ethical use of communication technologies.

What Makes Us Alternative and Why Does It Work?
Our staff adapts to the needs of each student, using tools, such as Differentiated Instruction and individual programming. We discover what "achievement" means to each student. We practice on-going assessment. Our staff develops tools to re-pattern behaviour as needed by each student. Our staff approach is fluid and responsive to the needs of each individual student.
How Do Quads Work?
There are 4 Quads each year, our Quadmestered school year begins in September and ends in June. We welcome students four times a year - in September, November, February and April. Students register for two credits each Quad (8 credits per school year) and many students earn more than two credits per Quad through Credit Recovery, Dual Credit programs and Night School.
The Power Circle
When kids are achieving, their patterning is altered, and therefore, their behaviour and personal expectations fall into a more positive place. School staff work to connect as a team with parents, students, and the community to create unique, informed, and happier futures for all of our students.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
We welcome parental involvement. Many studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between student success and parent involvement. We invite all parents of our students to play an active role in their child's education.
