Cummer Valley Middle School's Mission Statement
Cummer Valley Middle School opened in 1985 and was named in honour of Jacob Cummer and his family, who were among the first settlers in this area. The school was built in 1960 and was called Northmount Junior High School until 1985.
The school currently has about 600 students in Grades 6, 7, and 8. The school services three elementary schools and provides a transition program that supports the unique needs of students during their early adolescent years.
Special Programs
Cummer Valley houses Special Education classes at each grade level,
including the Gifted program. We also offer a core English as a Second Language
program at each grade level. We
offer a robust Band and Strings program. In Grade 6, students select
either a band or string course of study for their middle school years. We operate an enriched Design and
Technology program whereby students are engaged in technology-based projects.

We are committed to providing a caring and safe

students. The healthy relationships among students, staff and parents are
integral and essential parts of the Cummer Valley community. Our three settlement
workers do their best to support newcomers to Canada on an ongoing basis.
Character Education and 21st Century Competencies
Throughout
the year our students learn how character traits and 21st century competencies
help them become successful and contributing members of a global society. Students are recognized for demonstrating
these attributes on a monthly basis. We
also honour the Future Aces values, which emphasize academic achievement,
cooperation, excellence and service to others.

EcoSchools Gold Status
EcoSchools is a TDSB initiative to reduce energy and waste production at TDSB schools. The Eco-Team at Cummer Valley comprises four sub-committees, and students and parents are encouraged to support or participate in any or all:

Information Communications Technologies:
We embrace the use of Information Communications
Technologies (ICT) to enhance learning and extend the classroom beyond the
limitations of our walls. We use
Academic Workspace and Google Apps for Education to allow students to
communicate within the safety of the TDSB’s network. We offer full, school-wide
access to wifi, with newly upgraded bandwidth.
Students are learning how to safely use computer tools and the Internet
to build their digital citizenship.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The School Council at Cummer Valley is an active one. The members are very involved in advocating for our students, communicating with the larger parent community, organizing general meetings and special events, and providing input to the school and the TDSB. The School Council hosts general meetings, which focus on topics of current interest to parents such as parenting adolescents, media influence on our students, and internet safety.
As the first school to incorporate the Future Aces Creed back in 1977, we have a special relationship with the Carnegie family and the Future Aces Foundation.
