Armour Heights Public School's Mission Statement

Armour Heights Public School is located on the north side of Wilson Avenue, east of Avenue Road. It first opened in 1945 and, at that time, was considered to be a state-of-the-art building.

  • The school serves approximately 370 students
  • We are a highly respected, progressive, academic school
  • Our supportive parent/guardian community, excellent staff and motivated students are all welcome components of our community school
  • We are proud partners of the Canadian Forces and Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club

We maintain high expectations for our students by promoting active citizenship through a focus on critical thinking, character education and social responsibility.

We continue to further engage our students with teaching tools like SmartBoards in every classroom. Our objective is to put technology into the students' hands with mobile devices, so that they can explore their creativity and innovate as we prepare them for careers in the 21st century.

Equity and Social Justice

Community is created in each classroom through ongoing conversations relating to social and emotional development and relevant issues impacting our students. Armour Heights uses a restorative approach which helps maintain and repair relationships for fostering a sense of social responsibility and shared accountability.

Each month, we highlight one character trait in order to further develop caring and responsible citizens. Student participation in assemblies, morning announcements, school productions, service clubs, food drives and fundraising help our young learners understand the importance of giving. Along with our Family and School Association, we annually support a "Giving Tree" in December to provide some happiness to children going through long term care in Toronto hospitals. “Me to We” has inspired our students to critically examine social issues and many have been empowered to take action. We also have developed partnerships with the Canadian Armed Forces Military College and the Toronto Cricket Skating and Curling Club.

We believe that Drama, Dance and Music are critical forms of expression for students. Our Primary and Junior Choirs meet weekly and perform regularly throughout the year. All students perform choreographed routines for students, parents and guardians. Our students also have the opportunity to participate in our annual musical performances.

Community Engagement

We are dedicated to engaging our community partners. We continue to welcome parents/ guardians to actively engage in school-life as we enhance our partnerships to further support student learning at Armour Heights.

We are extremely fortunate to have the support of our School Council (Family and School Association). They are responsible for community events like our Welcome Back BBQ, Fun Fair and fundraising initiatives to support the teaching and learning at Armour Heights.

An Eco-School

Armour Heights is currently a Gold Standing Eco School. We are looking to further develop environmental practices to become environmentally responsible citizens and reduce our ecological footprint.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Students make our school.  Our monthly CHARACTER assemblies help students focus on positive attributes throughout their day at school and also to extend this behaviour in the community.  Many extracurricular activities and field trips provide experiential learning that stimulate thinking and expand learning.

WHAT SETS US APART

The hard work of our ECO Club parents, students and staff members has brought Armour Heights to a GOLD ECO status in many areas. Our choir director and supportive staff members cultivate student voices to such a level that there is an annual invitation to sing the national anthem at a local Blue Jay game.   The FSA provides lunch time programming to peak student interest to keep our kids learning and engaged during recess.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The parents and guardians at Armour Heights take a very active part in the school through the Family and School Association which gets involved with fundraising, organizing events (Bike Rodeo, Fun Fair, lunch programmes, musical presentations, Pizza Lunch), welcoming new families, sending out weekly news bulletins and much more. We are able to offer many experiential learning programmes through the FSA funds each year.  Research has shown that students perform better at school and enjoy school life more when their families support the school system.
