Second Street Junior Middle School's Mission Statement

Second Street Junior Middle School is located in the southwest corner of the Toronto District School Board, near Islington and Lake Shore Blvd.   The original school was built in 1949, and a large two storey wheelchair accessible addition was built in 1996.  Our staff, numbering near 50 (teachers, Educational Assistants and Special Needs Assistants), all work together to support our students.  Second Street JMS has a daily Healthy Kids snack program and we are also home to  YMCA Daycares with programs for kindergarten and school-age students for before-and-after school care.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Second Street JMS is committed to delivering curriculum that allows our students to create, learn and achieve in accordance with their individual needs and abilities.  We are careful to provide equity of access to our students in all learning opportunities.  We want to nurture the development of every student in an environment that is friendly, safe and productive.  Our staff and parents offer numerous opportunities for our students to be involved in school life outside of the classroom.  We want every student to feel valued, included, challenged and successful.

WHAT SETS US APART

Second Street Junior Middle School is a vibrant school community where parents, staff and students all work together to provide the best possible learning environment.  We hold several school wide special events through the year and our older students are important role models for our younger students.  Leadership opportunities are provided for all students and we love participating in conferences outside the school (e.g. "Dare to Dream" and "Young Women on the Move").  We encourage our students to volunteer within the school and within the larger community.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Second Street JMS values the support it receives from the community.  Lakeshore Area Multi-service Project (L.A.M.P.) and the new Toronto Police College are our next door neighbours and we participate in many joint programs with them throughout the year.  Our partnership with Lakeshore Arts and Humber College allows our Grade 7 and 8 students to be involved in the "Shazaam" project every year.   We also collaborate with various Faculties of Education, the Faculty of Nursing at U of T, and many ECE programs.  Our School Council actively supports school initiatives through and many parents and community members volunteer in the classroom, assist with field trips and help out at special events.
