The Elms Junior Middle School's Mission Statement
The Elms J M School is located in the Rexdale community of north Etobicoke. We are an inner-city JK to Gr. 8 school of 440 students.
- We house many programs such as The Early Years Parenting Centre, the Centre for Early Childhood Education (Daycare), a Community School and Pool and International Languages.
- We have a snack program in which students who participate receives a nutritious snack once a day.
The school was opened on Thursday, October 20th, 1960. Our motto is, "Together we're better!"
In September 2012, we opened Boys Leadership Academy. This is a "School within a School", focused on providing boys with an education that suits their varied learning styles. The TDSB has approved the opening of the academy in response to the research data on underachievement of some boys.
Boys Leadership Academy continues to grow with grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 classes. In 2014 and 2015 an additional grade level will be added.

KINDERGARTEN
Our kindergarten classes are all day. We have an exciting program which engages our students in a variety of creative activities. Learning is experiential and exploratory. There is a focus on integration of the curriculum expectations through Language and Math. We have a strong emphasis on collaboration and questioning ideas.
For safety reasons, all visitors are required to enter through the front door and check in first at the office. In addition, all our doors are locked and a buzzer system is in place.
INTEGRATIVE THINKING
We are working with U of T / Rotman School of Business to help our students learn how to listen to opposable ideas and use them to enhance and expand their own thinking.
LITERACY
Since Literacy, Math, and Critical Thinking are essential for our students to succeed globally, we emphasis the development of skills, Knowledge Building and Collaborative Inquiry. We also have programs such as Reading Recovery, Early Reading Intervention and on line reading programs.
NUMERACY
Our teachers have a hands on approach to numeracy and they use manipulatives such as counters, blocks, algebra tiles and geoboards.
All our teachers participate in weekly TLCPs to improve their teaching strategies. All teachers from JK to Grade 8, teach problem solving techniques in solving problems with real life application.
