Westmount Junior School's Mission Statement

Westmount Junior School is located in a residential community in the area of Eglinton Avenue West and Royal York Road in Etobicoke. Westmount opened on February 25, 1960 and is a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 school of approximately 240 students.

At Westmount we take pride in our school and it is our goal to work with families and the community to support our students in achieving academic excellence, becoming active stewards of our community and remaining lifelong learners.

Parent/ Community Engagement

Westmount has a very active School Council. Parents play very important roles as they volunteer in the classrooms and throughout the school by reading to children, organizing special events, and initiating various fund-raising activities.

With the current Covid restrictions parents have remained active participants in their children’s learning.  They have attended virtual Celebration of Growing, Learning and Leadership assemblies and other virtual events.

Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics and goals. They are community-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety of opportunities and there are enough students in our school to increase program choices. Imagine there is a clear focus on achieving student success and every student is engaged, has a voice, access to a caring adult and the opportunity to develop their full potential. Here at Westmount Junior School our focus is on student achievement, student well-being, and parent/community engagement.

More Information About Westmount Junior School

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is the perfect time to begin the life-long enjoyment of learning that we foster in the lives of each of our students. Westmount offers a Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) play-based program to its youngest learners. In early spring, parents are invited to a Welcome to Kindergarten Orientation.

Families will have the opportunity to meet the Teachers, Early Childhood Educators, and learn more about our exciting kindergarten program.

Technology

Technology is becoming an increasingly important part of school life. At Westmount, we have taken steps to infuse technology in teaching and learning. Students are growing up in a digital age. We are continuously providing them with opportunities to use computers as they learn content related to curriculum objectives.

Westmount currently houses interactive white boards, school-wide wireless access to the internet, access to Chromebooks, and iPads in every classroom.

Snack Program

Westmount encourages healthy eating and provides daily nutritious snacks for all students. We promote a healthy, active lifestyle, and students in JK-5 receive gym and mindfulness activities. Students are learning about the body/mind connection and are developing an awareness of how to improve their personal level of fitness and personal well-being.

EcoSchool

We strive to maintain our Platinum Eco School status and continue to implement the various environmental awareness initiatives already established. We promote ecological responsibility and sustainable attitudes and behaviour throughout our school community.

Example programs: recycling run by the junior students, saving energy by turning off lights and computers when not in use, and Earth Month initiatives.
A recent initiative at Westmount Junior School included participating in an Ontario Wide collection of used batteries. This competition resulted in the collection of many barrels of used batteries, and placed us at the top of the leaderboard.

Student Life - Where You Belong

GO TEAM

Student voice is an integral part of our school culture. Students actively communicate their ideas, with student-led assemblies, and Morning Announcements. Students are selected to participate in the Caring and Safe Committee to make suggestions, and provide feedback for school improvement.

Character Education is an integral component of our learning goals. Students learn to work together cooperatively, and to support each other both inside and outside of the classroom. Junior students act as mentors and leaders in our school community.

At Westmount Junior School, we show respect for others at all times; we appreciate our school; we do not tolerate bullying, and we always do our best.
