Étienne Brûlé Junior School's Mission Statement
Etienne Brule Junior School is a small community school located at Parklawn and Berry Road. Our school was built in 1957 and named after the French explorer Etienne Brule, who was the first European explorer to reach the mouth of the Humber River and set foot in Toronto.
Etienne Brule serves approximately 180 students, representing a very diverse community. Our mission is to promote the attitudes, skills, and knowledge necessary to live in a global society. We believe everyone must be engaged in ongoing learning to improve student achievement. One of our goals is to transform student learning through equitable practices and we use technology as a tool to engage students.
The mental health and well-being of everyone is important to us. At Etienne Brule student safety is always our number one priority. Our school provides a safe and caring environment where all students and families feel welcome.
Collaborative Inquiry
Inquiry based learning is taking place in all classrooms. Teachers are encouraged to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to inquiry based learning. Students tend to be more engaged in learning when they can learn from exploration and through themes that meet their interests.

Equity
Etienne Brule provides support for students new to our country as well as to ELL learners. Our reading materials are reflective of our school population. Inclusive resources are in our classrooms and our library and differentiated instruction is incorporated in lessons. Respect and empathy for all cultures is promoted on an ongoing basis.
Roots of Empathy
Etienne Brule takes part in the Roots of Empathy program. Each year a class is chosen to receive instruction on child development and empathy from a Roots of Empathy instructor, followed by a visit from a mother and her baby. This year our Grade 1 class is participating in the Roots of Empathy Program. This is another school-community partnership.
Technology at Etienne Brule
Integrating technology in learning has been a focus of our school. All classes from Grades 1 to 5 have access to a laptop cart; there are interactive white boards in almost all classrooms and students have access to either a laptop or an ipad for differentiated learning as needed. WHAT SETS US APART
Since we are a small school we get to know many of our students and their families even before they begin kindergarten as many of them attend the daycare on site. Parents and children feel welcome and each staff member knows almost every student personally by name.
PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Etienne Brule parents work together with us to ensure our school meets the needs of all of our students. Volunteers from our community assist us in the classrooms, on school trips, our skating program, and provide special activities for the students, such as a Dance-a-thon and BBQ/Fun Fair and Holiday Cookie decorating. We have a small but very active and vibrant school council.
Etienne Brule has close ties with the Food Bank, Public Library, Stonegate Community Health Centre, Parks and Recreation, Community Police, Fire and Health Services. We are a host school for candidates from various Faculties of Education. We have links to many Charitable Organizations, such as Terry Fox and Heart and Stroke Foundation.
