Tutors in the Classroom

The TDSB offers a Tutors in the Classroom project, a partnership between the TDSB and the Literacy and Numeracy Secretariat of the Ministry of Education.  Under this program, schools are eligible to hire a tutor and these tutors receive a stipend for their service.  Since its introduction in 1997, this student support opportunity has benefited both schools and students.  The program is intended to provide assistance to Elementary classroom teachers through tutoring activities and direct contact with students, assisting teachers with reinforcing skills and concepts.  This year, the offer extends to all schools, however priority will be given to elementary schools lower on the LOI index.

Elementary Principals will be responsible for hiring full time college and university students who want to make an ongoing commitment.  Individual schools are entitled to contract the services of a single tutor to assist students with improving their literacy and numeracy skills. Tutors are eligible to be paid for 100 hours of service at $10 per hour over the entire school year.

To be considered, tutors must:
  • Be a current full-time university or college student (No graduate students or unemployed certified teachers or current TDSB employees are eligible)
  • Have completed a Police Reference Check (Vulnerable Sector Screening)
