Last month, the TDSB’s Community Services Unit held its first-ever Open House for the public, partners and staff, where all programs and services were represented under one roof. The Open House, which was held at LINC - Overlea, welcomed approximately 100 community members from the Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood and surrounding communities.
The event included the following interesting and informative activities and presentations for participants:
- Displays by the Studio500 Hairstylist program where staff worked on attendee’s hair and let participants try using hair tools on mannequins.
- Information about Welcoming Communities, TDSB’s only peer-mentorship program.
- Information about LINC-Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada through a “Human Library”, in which attendees could speak with and ask questions to learners and staff.
- Panel discussions by Enhanced Language Training and Essential Skills Upgrading, featuring alumni and current students.
- Q&A session on newcomer settlement by Newcomer Services.
- Employment panel discussion by Scarborough Centre for Employment Accessibility and Next-Steps Employment Centre, featuring CEO and Executive Chef of Toronto’s Casa Manila Restaurants
