Celebrating Teaching Excellence

Categories: News

The Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence and Teaching Excellence in STEM recognizes educators who bring passion, dedication, and innovation to their classrooms, profoundly impacting their school communities.

This year, we are proud to celebrate Cory Cattell, who received the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM, and Chris Cabacungan, who received the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence.

At Zion Heights Middle School, Cory Cattell goes beyond her role as a science teacher, significantly contributing to the vibrant school community. Teaching Math, Science, Language, Health, and Physical Education to grade 8 students, Cory also coaches several sports teams, leads the Zion Activity Council, and mentors students in computer science and technology challenges. Her leadership extends to areas such as Guidance and Career Pathways, STEM/Science, Wellness & Health Education, and Community Engagement.

Cory's teaching philosophy encourages students to consider multiple perspectives and to advocate for what they believe in. For example, during a unit on water behavior, she prompted her students with the question, "Who's missing from this conversation?" This led to a meaningful discussion on the drinking water issues faced by Indigenous communities. By integrating art, drama, and creative writing into science assignments, Cory makes learning more engaging and helps students enhance their public speaking skills. Her innovative approach fosters a classroom environment where curiosity thrives, and horizons expand.

At Forest Hill Junior and Senior Public School, Chris Cabacungan's holistic approach to education prepares his grade 6 gifted students for the future by instilling a sense of responsibility toward their community and the world. Chris teaches Math, Language, Social Studies, Science, Arts, Health, and Physical Education, creating a positive classroom atmosphere where independent thinking and mutual respect are paramount. Beyond his teaching role, Chris actively supports the school community in various capacities. He volunteers for the graduation trip and ceremony, despite primarily teaching grade 6 students, serves as the TDESSA representative, coaches both junior and senior basketball and volleyball teams, and plays a vital role in supporting the school’s annual Dance-a-thon fundraiser. Recently becoming a father this May, Chris celebrates another milestone while continuing to embody dedication both to his family and the school community.

Chris empowers his students to tackle complex, real-world issues through realistic learning experiences that go beyond traditional classroom boundaries. He integrates digital and creative literacy and develops unique, hands-on projects that foster autonomy, critical thinking, and global awareness. His ability to nurture enthusiasm for learning and school is evident in the lively and engaged classroom he cultivates.

Since 1994, the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence have acknowledged outstanding elementary and secondary school educators across all subjects, honoring over 1,800 teachers to date. Recipients of the Teaching Excellence Awards are celebrated for their exceptional contributions to education and their dedication to equipping youth for a digital and innovation-driven economy. Additionally, the Teaching Excellence in STEM Awards specifically recognize exemplary teachers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, who play a crucial role in cultivating the culture of innovation essential for Canada's present and future.
