Cherilyn Scobie

Centrally Assigned Principal

I confess that for quite some time that I started to consider leaving education.

After learning about another student who had died too soon and reviewing data which reflected that marginalized learners – students who looked like me – continued to be underserved, I was frustrated, torn, and questioning why our structures and systems were not changing.

Although I loved my job, community, and the students and staff that I was blessed to serve, I wondered if I was doing enough. I admit that I wanted to throw in the towel but feared the repercussions. But suddenly, there was a shift. Our system structures began to change, new positions were announced, and there was a clear change in how our board started to look at and think about equity and anti-oppression.

Although I was skeptical at first, this new year, new vision, and the challenging conversations that we are having as a system, has me  ... EXCITED. There is really no other word for it. I understand that change will take time and change may be uncomfortable, but it is worth it.

I see that we are no longer afraid to take the transformational steps that are needed to transform how we serve students within the TDSB. I expect the data to change. I expect ALL students to be served. I expect that we shall continue this difficult process of transformation. #ExpectMore
