Equity and Inclusive Education

The TDSB values the contribution of all members of our diverse community of students, staff, parents, and community groups to our mission and goals. We believe that equity of opportunity, and equity of access to our programs, services, and resources are critical to the achievement of successful outcomes for all those whom we serve, and for those who serve our school system.

From May 3-5 2012, the TDSB hosted its second annual Futures Conference on all areas of equitable policy and practice impacting student achievement and well-being, including the Ontario Ministry of Education's Equity and Inclusive Education Strategy's eight areas of focus. Guest speakers included Dr. Ben Levin, Sylvia Maracle, and Dr. P. Noguera.

Young Women on the Move celebrated its third year and held a number of events throughout the year on the theme Leadership Through Social Action focusing on self-esteem, positive body image and social justice. A special event was held on March 8 with Minister for the Status of Women, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, in celebration of International Women's Day and the United Nations declaration of the International Day of the Girl Child.

During the year, progress was made on the Opportunity Gap Report including curriculum work for the Leonard Braithwaite Africentric Secondary School program, the report of the Portuguese Task Force, and work on establishing the Aboriginal K-12 school.
