Recently, Canadian Juno award winning recording artist, Shawn Desman was invited into Earl Haig Secondary School as a guest speaker and performer. The purpose of the visit was to inspire students in the arts, to hear a personal story from a working artist, and to encourage them to follow their dreams.
Shawn captivated the attention of the students when he recounted his life story and shared how he always persevered even when things got tough. The students were moved by his artistic and personal successes as well as his struggles in the music and entertainment industry. His many achievements include dancing, singing, acting, producing, and film making. The audience was delighted to hear his acoustic renditions of “Shiver” and “Night Like This”.
“Shawn reminded me that hard work and perseverance pay off in the end", says a grade 12 student.
“The energy in the auditorium from the stage to the audience was really vibrant. Hearing him tell the story that he had been dropped by his label was good for us because he talked about how he bounced back and found further success afterwards”, comments a grade 10 student.
Students joined Shawn on stage and showed off their talent during his performance. They really enjoyed hearing his story and seeing him perform. They have taken in his inspiring words and will remember to follow his advice when following their own dreams.
