The Toronto District School Board is proud of the great things that happen in our classrooms and schools across Toronto each day. From the learning, growing and mentoring that occurs in our classrooms to the community partnerships that help us build some of the strongest school communities in Ontario, TDSB students, parents/guardians and staff have much to celebrate.
With over 258 000 students, 40 000 staff and 619 buildings, the TDSB has a unique opportunity to positively impact the students and communities it serves. Through its deep commitment to excellence, equity and inclusion the TDSB has become a world leader in enabling students to achieve academic and personal success. As recognition of outstanding leadership across the Board, classrooms and teaching practices, the TDSB has hosted numerous international delegations.
In 2011-2012, 7392 Full-Day Kindergarten and Kindergarten students entered the TDSB to begin a 13 year journey that will be an important part of who they become as adults and members of the community. We believe that supporting, engaging and challenging students along this journey will help all of them achieve high levels of success.
The TDSB is a confident organization and sustaining public confidence demands even greater accountability in decision- making and transparency of actions. To this end, an important focus for the 2012-2013 school year will be strengthening the checks and balances that support a greater culture of transparency and accountability.
Director of Education
Under the Education Act, the Director of Education is responsible for developing an annual plan and reporting on the Board's accomplishments each year.
On June 23, 2011, Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Trustees passed five strategic directions that are the driver of the Board's annual planning from 2011 to 2015. The Strategic Directions were the result of an extensive consultation process and reinforce the Board's commitment to making excellence and equity integral to every system initiative and action.
TDSB Strategic Directions for 2011-2015:
- Make every school an effective school.
- Build leadership within a culture of adaptability, openness and resilience.
- Form strong and effective relationships and partnerships.
- Build environmentally sustainable schools that inspire teaching and learning.
- Identify disadvantage and intervene effectively.
The Director works with the Senior Team to ensure that all areas of the Board are building key objectives into each successive annual plan and developing indicators to measure TDSB's progress toward meeting the goals set by the Strategic Directions.
This report highlights the progress made to date based on the Director's Annual Report for the School Year 2011-12 towards realizing the goals of the Strategic Directions. It also outlines action items and objectives for the 2012-2013 school year.
